What does it take to make beautiful music? An old bandshell in the local park attracts a group of young people (animals actually), excited by the prospect of making music together. In Aniela Emma Chaudhuri’s The Accidental Orchestra, the young people bring their instruments to the bandshell and start playing along. When Charlie arrives, she’s appalled at the noise. It was chaos. She described what she heard as “musical soup.” The group of musicians needed some organization and someone to lead them. They needed Charlie and, luckily, she was up to the task.

Aniela Emma Chaudhuri’s picture book The Accidental Orchestra is a fun read about an unlikely group of musicians. The story is told in rhyming verse. The plot follows the growing interest in a musical group and how they are challenged to work and perform together. They have talent, but they need to work on their teamwork skills, cooperate and follow a leader, and build their community spirit. It all happens through music. The story is full of energy and humor and young readers will appreciate the lyricism of the presentation. The bright, bold, and colorful illustrations help move the story forward – I just love the facial expression on Charlie when she approaches the bandshell and describes what she hears in the chaos. This is a very creative story that explores the curiosity of the young and energetic mind. It’s also interesting how the author brings together sports children and those who excel in the arts. I loved it!”
