## PAGE 2 — ENDORSEMENT / BACK COVER QUOTE
> *"One of the biggest challenges when teaching young people is that the elements that are taught often get confused or muddled, simply due to the large amount of information which is shared. The use of some kind of practice log or notebook is recommended and with Ani's beautifully structured Logbook I am sure that students, teachers and parents alike will have an easier experience!"*

## PAGE 5 — INTRODUCTION / INSTRUCTIONS PAGE
This practice plan is designed to allow progress to happen naturally over the course of a week, by alternating scales, focusing on small sections and musical ideas, and building good habits that tackle challenges head on. Too often, we see students play through, or repeat mindlessly without truly having a goal or understanding of what is to be achieved and how it can be done. This book helps to motivate students and encourages communication and open exchange between teachers, students and parents.
**Setup** — What does the student need to do before beginning each practice session?
For example:
- Make sure the music stand is at the correct height
- Stand or sit correctly – pay attention to posture and balance
- Practice holding the instrument in rest position and changing to playing position
- Make sure the bow is rosined, reeds are prepared, mouthpieces are clean, piano stool is at the correct height and metronome is prepared
- Make sure the footstool/guitar support is adjusted at a comfortable height
**Warm Up** — How should the student warm up before playing?
For example:
- Whole bows on open strings
- Long tones
- Humming / stretching / vocal slides
- Buzzing on the mouthpiece
- Open string alternate picking
**Technical Exercise** — Which aspect of technique is to be focused upon this week?
For example:
- Prepare in mind before playing
- Left / right hand exercises
- Breath
- Vibrato
- Embouchure
- Articulation
- Tremolo
**Scales** — Which scales should be practiced?
For example:
- Major/minor scales and arpeggios
- Dominant and diminished 7ths
- Chromatic scales
- Double stops / thirds / contrary motion
**Étude** — Which etude supports the current learning of technique and repertoire?
**Repertoire** — Which pieces of music is the student learning?
**Goals** — What does the teacher/student want to achieve in this week?
For example:
- Practicing at the same time each day for the same length of time
- Cleaning the instrument after the end of each session
- Scales to be memorized
- Repertoire to be at a particular tempo
**Student Notes** — What has the student observed about their practice?
For example:
- What went well?
- What needs more attention?
- What brings joy / frustration?
**Parent Notes** — What have parents noticed about the student's practice?
For example:
- Motivation and enjoyment
- Focus and attention span
- Anything to be communicated to the teacher at the next lesson
